NMS Pharmaceuticals Inc. said it has received approval from the Food and Drug Administration to sell a home ovulation test kit over the counter.
The product, called Fortel, is scheduled to be on the market in January, according to Joseph H. Irani, president of the Newport Beach company. Fortel is designed to predict when a woman is most likely to conceive by monitoring hormone levels in the urine.
NMS will compete with Tambrands and Johnson & Johnson products already on the market, which the company estimates is $325 million a year.
In addition, Irani said that a new NMS home test kit for detecting blood in urine should be available in drug stores nationwide next month. The company received FDA approval early in July to market that kit, which is supposed to provide early detection of prostate, bladder and other diseases, Irani said.
