The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors gave preliminary approval to an ordinance that would limit flag-raising ceremonies at county facilities to the banners of countries with diplomatic relations with the United States. The ordinance would prohibit a Taiwanese flag-raising ceremony held each year by Supervisor Michael Antonovich, who opposed the restriction. Official diplomatic recognition of Taiwan ended when the United States established relations with China several years ago. Supervisor Pete Schabarum said such ceremonies create confusion in the public’s eyes.
