Defensive tackle Willie Ryles of Alabama remained in critical condition in a Birmingham hospital after surgery to relieve pressure from a blood clot on his brain.
Ryles, 19, collapsed during practice Monday and was taken first to a Tuscaloosa hospital, then to University Hospital in Birmingham.
Coach Ray Perkins said the 6-4, 240-pound sophomore from Phenix City, Ala. took “a normal blow” during a drill and rolled over.
Dr. Carter Morris, chief resident for neurosurgery at University Hospital, said blood vessels in the left side of Ryles’ brain broke and caused a clot.
