Pilot Reported Trouble Before Fatal Ft. Dix Crash

FT. DIX, N. J. — The pilot of small plane that crashed on an Army artillery range and killed all three people aboard had reported trouble with the navigational equipment he needed to find his way through heavy rain and overcast skies, an Army spokesman said Friday.
Norman A. Sharpless of Princess Anne, Md., told the control tower at nearby McGuire Air Force Base that he was disoriented and in trouble Thursday, Ft. Dix spokesman Richard Dowling said. Moments later, the plane disappeared from radar screens.
