Astronomers have discovered a powerful new magnetic field in the Milky Way that could give new clues to how stars are formed, the National Science Foundation said. The new magnetic field is twice as strong as any yet detected in a star-forming region of the Milky Way, the report said. Magnetic fields can either impede or accelerate the formation of stars, said Thomas Troland of the University of Kentucky, one of the astronomers involved in the discovery.
