Brazilian Workers Threaten to Strike

RIO DE JANEIRO — More than 1.5 million Brazilian workers have threatened to go on strike Thursday if their demands for salary increases are not met, union officials said Tuesday.
The country’s two main unions said employers had until 11:50 p.m. today to meet salary demands. Schoolteachers, bank employees and public servants are expected to join the nationwide stoppage, union spokesmen said.
Labor Minister Almir Pazzianotto said the government has no plans to interfere, but he warned that it would “not tolerate chaos” and would apply the law whenever necessary.
Under Brazilian law, employees in services considered essential are forbidden from striking, and offenders can be fired without pay.
