Buena Park and Rancho Alamitos high schools played to a 7-7 tie Friday night at Buena Park High School in new Coyote Coach Mike Barron’s return to prep football.
Barron, who was once the coach at Rancho Alamitos, was the head coach at West Hills College of Coalinga last year.
Buena Park trailed, 7-0, in the fourth quarter, but tied the score with 8:54 left when tailback Dan Wennerge scored on a three-yard run. Lonnie Legg added the extra point. The touchdown completed a 18-play, 85-yard drive.
The Vaqueros, who were 1-8 last season, scored first midway through the second quarter. On fourth down and and eight to go from the Buena Park 28, Rancho Alamitos quarterback John Newsome completed an 11-yard pass over the middle to tight end Jason Sweet. After three runs by Sean Cheatham, who had 127 yards on 27 carries, the ball was at the three.
On third down, junior fullback Cheatham went over left tackle for the touchdown.
The score was set up by junior safety Charles Panusis’ interception at the Buena Park 40.
