Bo Jackson’s First Homer: 475 Feet, or About 158 Yards

KANSAS CITY — Kansas City Royal rookie Bo Jackson’s first major league home run Sunday was a memorable one.

The 1985 Heisman Trophy winner from Auburn, who spurned millions of dollars from the National Football League’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers to play baseball, hit a towering 475-foot home run high onto a grassy knoll beyond the left-center field fence at Royals Stadium off Seattle Mariner starter Mike Moore.

Royals officials called it the longest home run hit in this stadium, which opened in 1973.

A chart of the longest balls hit in Royals Stadium showed that Jackson’s drive landed about four feet above a home run by former Chicago White Sox slugger Richie Allen in 1974.

Jackson’s homer came in the fourth inning of the Royals’ 10-3 victory.
