Phil Anderson of Australia pulled away from two riders with 36 miles remaining and held off Ron Kiefel of the United States by 1 minute, 32 seconds to capture the inaugural Cititour professional bicycle race of New York.

Anderson, racing for the Panasonic team, completed the 157-mile course from Goshen, N.Y., in the Catskill Mountains to the United Nations in 6 hours 23 minutes 45.59 seconds. He earned the $15,000 winner’s share of the $75,000 purse.

Rolph Sorensen of Denmark posted the same time as Kiefel to finish third. Kiefel, racing for the 7-Eleven team, earned $10,000. Greg LeMond, the first American to win the prestigious Tour de France this July, did not complete the race.
