FALL SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS : CSUN Fourth in Invitational at Riverside

The Cal State Northridge men’s cross-country team, led by the individual victory of Dave Walsh, finished fourth Saturday at the UC Riverside Invitational.
Walsh, a sophomore transfer from Ventura College, broke away from former Crespi standout Ray Cook at the 2 1/2-mile mark to win. His 24:19.3 effort was the second fastest clocking on the five-mile course. Cook holds the course record at 24:08.3.
Pierce College was third at the Mountie Invitational water polo tournament at Mount San Antonio College. Pierce advanced to the championship round by winning its bracket Friday, then won its first two matches Saturday. Then the Brahmas lost two straight.
Defending champion Santa Ynez High defeated Westlake in the championship match, 12-5, of the Nordhoff Water Polo Tournament in Ojai. Rusty Rudolph of Westlake, a four-meter man, was named to the all-tournament team. He scored four goals in the Warriors’ 11-9 semifinal victory over Arroyo Grande.
Nordhoff High defeated Westlake, 15-8, 15-4, in the final of the Calabasas girls volleyball tournament. Westlake, seeded seventh, advanced to the final by beating Canyon and Louisville. Nordhoff, ranked No. 1 in the Southern Section 3-A poll, advanced by defeating Royal and Calabasas.
