A new study found smokers have 50% more auto accidents and receive 46% more traffic tickets than nonsmokers. Dr. Joseph DiFranza of the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester, who headed the study of about 3,700 drivers, speculated that smokers may be less concerned in general about their health, therefore making them more likely to be reckless drivers. Also, interviews with the smokers found they were often distracted by smoking.
