Guidance counseling should start as early as elementary and junior high school, especially for disadvantaged students who might not otherwise aim for college, a College Board study concluded. The two-year study, titled “Keeping the Options Open,” was released at the College Board’s annual meeting in New York. The report also urged a redefinition of the counselor’s role to make it clearer that the counselor’s chief function is academic guidance, rather than social or psychological counseling.
