Cmdr. Russell G. Cross, 41, who runs the police personnel department, will temporarily replace Ussery when he retires, Dever said in a statement. The city manager is now soliciting resumes for Ussery’s permanent successor.
Several people have already expressed interest in the job, including Deputy Chief William Stovall and Capt. Doug Drummond, who is president of the Police Officers Assn.
Ussery, 63, the city’s first black chief, was appointed in 1979. He announced his retirement earlier this month.
