More than three years after a fire aboard an Air Canada jetliner killed 23 people, a federal regulation went into effect requiring smoke detectors in toilets of large airliners. The fire of undetermined origin swept through the DC-9 jetliner as it was flying near Cincinnati on June 2, 1983. The blaze aboard Air Canada Flight 797 started in one of the plane’s toilets.
