The city of Ann Arbor, Mich., sent a 17-member delegation to Nicaragua with medical supplies and a message of condemnation for U.S. support of the contras , who are seeking to overthrow the Sandinista government in Managua. The group, headed by Mayor Edward Pierce, departed for Ann Arbor’s sister city of Juigalpa, a regional capital of about 25,000 residents. A citywide ballot in April was approved 10,190 to 6,544, developing the sister-city tie and enabling Ann Arbor, with a population of 107,300, to voice its disapproval of U.S. backing for the rebels.
