A Bakersfield man was shot and seriously wounded after he allegedly pulled a pistol and tried to open fire when stopped by a police officer on the outskirts of Coachella. Police said Officer Dave Dunavent, 40, shot Isaac Gutierrez, 42, in the arm and leg after Gutierrez’ own pistol misfired when he put it to Dunavent’s head and pulled the trigger. Gutierrez and his 17-year-old son, who was armed with a shotgun, surrendered when other police arrived. Officers searched the van and discovered Gutierrez’ ex-wife, Rosa Gutierrez, 38, in the rear. She told them Gutierrez had kidnaped her after shooting her fiance, John C. Stopher, 35, to death at his Hesperia home. Stopher’s body was found, and Gutierrez was booked on suspicion of murder, kidnaping, and attempted murder of a police officer.
