Prime Minister Garret FitzGerald of Ireland pledged to have no dealings with Sinn Fein, the political wing of the outlawed Irish Republican Army, which decided to enter Irish parliamentary politics. FitzGerald, in a Dublin radio interview, urged all other Irish parties to shun Sinn Fein at the next election “when a challenge is put down to the democratic system by people with an Armalite (rifle) in one hand and a ballot paper in the other.” Sinn Fein decided at its convention Sunday to drop its policy of refusing to take seats won by its members in parliamentary elections.
