ALBUQUERQUE — Former assistant Interior Secretary Garrey E. Carruthers, a Republican, won the governor’s race against Democrat Ray B. Powell. Carruthers becomes the state’s first Republican governor in nearly two decades, succeeding Democrat Toney Anaya.
Carruthers led Powell, 54% to 46%, with 68% of the returns tallied.
Carruthers, 47, and Powell, 66, both were making their first bid for elective office. Powell is a retired vice president of Sandia National Laboratories.
