CHARLESTON — Three Democratic congressmen easily won reelection in races that failed to attract strong GOP challenges, while a referendum calling for a 20% increase in sales tax for highway construction was defeated.
In the 2nd District, two-term incumbent Harley O. Staggers Jr. defeated Morgantown pianist Michele Golden.
Bob Wise, also a two-term incumbent, beat former television anchorman Tim Sharp in the 3rd District, and five-term incumbent Nick Joe Rahall defeated retired railroad worker Martin Miller Sr. in the 4th District.
Republicans did not challenge incumbent Democrat Alan Mollohan in the 1st District.
