NEW YORK — Gov. Mario Cuomo, considered a possible 1988 Democratic presidential contender, and GOP Sen. Alfonse M. D’Amato both won easy reelection to second terms.
Cuomo rolled over under-financed GOP Westchester County Executive Andrew O’Rourke; D’Amato trounced Democrat Mark Green, a former Nader’s Raider.
Meanwhile, former Rep. Bella Abzug lost to freshman Republican Rep. Joseph J. DioGuardi in her effort to return to Congress in a Westchester County district, and Rep. Jack Kemp won his ninth term in upstate Erie County.
Cuomo’s margin broke the 104-year-old record for a New York gubernatorial race, and his followers hoped that it would fuel a presidential bid.
With 98% of the precincts reporting, Cuomo led O’Rourke, 65% to 32%.
