HONOLULU — Democratic Lt. Gov. John Waihee assured another four years of the 24-year Democratic hold on Hawaii’s top elected office by defeating Republican D. G. Anderson to become the fourth elected governor in Hawaii’s brief statehood.
Waihee won with 53% of the vote to Anderson’s 47%.
Democratic Sen. Daniel K. Inouye easily defeated Republican challenger Frank Hutchinson, 74% to 26%.
In the campaign for governor, Anderson identified Waihee with the Democratic Establishment that has controlled the state government for two decades. Waihee, who became lieutenant governor in 1984, tried to separate himself from Gov. George Ariyoshi’s Administration without being too critical and losing its support.
Each party won one seat in the state’s two-member congressional delegation.
