WAUSAU, Wis. — Former Iranian hostage Kevin Hermening was defeated in a congressional race on the seventh anniversary of the takeover of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran.
Democratic incumbent David R. Obey, a 17-year veteran of the 7th District, recaptured his seat Tuesday by a wide margin.
Hermening, a Marine guard at the embassy when it was stormed by revolutionaries in 1979, said he expects to run again in 1988. He and 51 other Americans were freed after being held for 444 days.
