Bill Yeoman to Resign as Houston Coach

Bill Yeoman, who coached the University of Houston to four Southwest Conference football titles, said Monday he will resign at the end of the current season.

Yeoman, in his 25th year at Houston, said he would remain at the school in another position to honor the remaining three years of his contract.

Yeoman made the disclosure to sportscaster Craig Roberts, who hosts Yeoman’s weekly television show. The coach said he would become a special assistant to the university chancellor and would concentrate on fund-raising and public relations.

With the Houston athletic program surrounded by controversy, the school currently is searching for an athletic director to replace Tom Ford.

Two former players have claimed that Yeoman and his staff paid players and allowed them to play while ineligible. Twelve players flunked out of school after last season, and 10 of his 28 recruits from 1985 were ruled scholastically ineligible.

The Cougars are 1-8 this season, assuring Yeoman of his second consecutive losing season.
