Masquerade, a 9-1 outsider, took the lead at the half-mile and held off fast-closing Robust Hanover to win the $543,850 Breeders Crown 3-Year-Old Colt Pace by 1 lengths at Garden State Park in Cherry Hill, N.J.
Masquerade’s victory capped a night of upsets in the $2.4-million, four-race finale of the third annual Breeders Crown series.
Ron Waples, who entered the program as the nation’s sixth-leading driver, moved up to fourth by driving consecutive winners. He drove Glow Softly, a 32-1 shot, to victory by a nose in the $412,387 3-Year-Old Filly Pace and Sugarcane Hanover, the 3-1 second choice, to a 1 -length win in the $460,350 3-Year-Old Colt and Gelding Trot. Glow Softly’s win price of $67.40 was the largest in Breeders Crown history.
Sunset Warrior, the 5-1 second choice, won the $614,700 2-Year-Old Colt Pace, but Redskin, the 3-10 favorite, collected enough purse money by finishing second to set a record for earnings by a juvenile standardbred.
