Was it a mountain lion--or just a little bobcat? Two days in a row last week, Cowan Heights residents reported seeing a mountain lion near a horse trail at Travertine Place and Grove Oak Drive, east of Orange. Sheriff’s deputies said tracks found in the area confirmed that the first sighting, on Tuesday, was indeed a mountain lion.
But Joe Oliver, chief of county field services for animal control, said the next day that the tracks found Tuesday were actually those of a bobcat. And another search of the area following a reported lion sighting on Wednesday turned up nothing but a blond Labrador retriever.
Reports of lion sightings have increased in Orange County since the attacks in Ronald W. Caspers Wilderness Park earlier this year on two children.
“It’s like UFOs--you can have a whole bunch of sightings after this much publicity,” said Len Liberio, director of Orange County Animal Control.
