SMU President Shields Quits, Citing Ill Health

DALLAS — Southern Methodist University President L. Donald Shields announced Friday that he is resigning immediately for medical reasons, officials said.
Shields, 50, who became president in October, 1980, cited deteriorating health caused by diabetes. William B. Stallcup, acting provost at SMU, will serve as interim president.
