SANTA FE, N.M. — Lame-duck Gov. Toney Anaya today commuted the death sentences of all five men on New Mexico’s death row.
Anaya, who vowed that no one would be executed during his term, said he would be just as guilty if he failed to act to save their lives now. Anaya, a Democrat who leaves office Dec. 31, will be succeeded by Republican Garrey Carruthers.
