The northbound Golden State Freeway in Burbank was closed for more than eight hours Saturday after a gasoline tanker overturned and its load of fuel began to leak, authorities said.
At 11:30 Friday night, an Atlantic Richfield Co. truck hauling 8,000 gallons of gasoline in two tanks skidded on wet pavement near Olive Avenue and jackknifed, California Highway Patrol Officer Lujuanna Lopez said. The rear tank overturned and gasoline began to leak from a broken seam, she said.
The driver was unhurt and the fuel did not burn, but the accident forced the closure of all northbound lanes while crews righted the truck and used sand to catch the spilling gasoline, Lopez said.
Three of the lanes were reopened about 7:15 a.m., the other lane reopened around noon, authorities said.
About 391 gallons of gasoline escaped, Lopez said.
