Loyola High School, which lost three games this season, all by close margins to teams that reached the Big Five Conference semifinals and final, took two top Central City honors Sunday at The Times’ annual football awards banquet at the Anaheim Hilton.
Senior David Matter, a two-way starter, was named lineman of the year, and Locke junior Darian Hagan, who finished the regular season No. 1 in the City in rushing and No. 4 in scoring, earned back of the year honors. Steve Grady, in his 11th season with Loyola, was named coach of the year.
In all, 230 players from The Times’ 10 circulation areas were honored. John Cooper, coach of Rose Bowl-bound Arizona State, was the speaker.
