Top-Seeded Edison Favored to Win Marina-Edison Girl’s Tournament

Edison High School will be the favorite to win the 16-team Marina-Edison girls’ basketball tournament, which begins today at Edison.
Edison (9-1), the tournament’s top-seeded team, has won the Irvine and Savanna tournaments. Its only loss came Tuesday against Lynwood, the defending Southern Section 4-A champion.
Expected to challenge Edison are Mission Viejo, Katella, Esperanza and Los Alamitos.
Featured players will be Edison’s Michelle Hennessey, Denise Ogburn and Kristi Smith; Mission Viejo’s Michelle Reid, Esperanza’s Karin Davidson, Katella’s Kelli Johnson and Fountain Valley’s Melissa Handley.
The first-round pairings:
9:30 a.m.--Mission Viejo vs. Savanna; 11--Los Alamitos vs. Huntington Beach; 12:30 p.m.--Orange vs. Foothill; 2--Corona del Mar vs. Marina; 4--Long Beach Wilson vs. Katella; 5:30--Fountain Valley vs. Mater Dei; 7--El Toro vs. Esperanza; 8:30--Loara vs. Edison.
