CHULA VISTA — An early-morning fire in a mobile home Friday killed a 53-year-old woman and threatened neighboring homes, the Chula Vista Fire Department said.
A police officer, who was first to arrive at Brentwood Mobile Home Park at 3 a.m., tried to enter Barbara Phillips’ burning home but was forced back by heat and smoke, Fire Department Battalion Chief Sam Lopez said.
Firefighters pulled Phillips from the dwelling, but attempts to resuscitate her failed, Lopez said. The woman lived alone, fire officials said.
The fire spread to an adjacent mobile home, which was partially damaged before the fire was put out. A car inside a carport also was destroyed.
The fire may have been started by a cigarette, fire officials said.
Damage to the destroyed mobile home was estimated at $25,000, Lopez said. Damage to the adjacent home and car was estimated at $1,000 each.
