NAPLES, Italy — The U.S. Navy announced Tuesday that a 6th Fleet F-14 jet fighter crashed into the sea while attempting a night landing aboard the carrier John F. Kennedy but said that its two crewmen ejected from the plane and escaped injury.
A statement issued by the Fleet-Air Mediterranean Command said the accident happened late Saturday about 90 miles east of the Spanish island of Menorca in the western Mediterranean.
“The F-14 Tomcat sustained damage when it hit an A-6 Intruder aircraft parked on the flight deck,” the statement said.
It said the John F. Kennedy was in international waters at the time and that the F-14 Tomcat crashed into the sea after the flight deck collision.
