A woman who hired a surrogate mother correctly believed she could not safely bear her own child because she suffers multiple sclerosis, a doctor testified in Hackensack, N.J. Dr. Stuart D. Cook of the New Jersey School of Medicine said multiple sclerosis paients face a 20% to 40% chance of suffering additional symptoms of the disease after giving birth. Cook testified he agreed with Elizabeth Stern’s decision not to bear a child, an issue in a court battle for the 9 1/2-month-old girl born to the surrogate.
