Tomas Jonsson, a defenseman for the New York Islanders, was in stable condition after undergoing surgery for multiple jaw fractures that he suffered in a car accident in Detroit.
Jonsson and teammate Brian Curran were being driven back to their hotel from a nightclub by two 17-year-old girls when the car ran a red light and was struck by a semi-trailer. Curran and one of the girls were treated and released, but the driver was listed in critical condition.
Curran was fined $500 by the National Hockey League for his role in a bench-clearing brawl between the Islanders and the Philadelphia Flyers last Sunday night. Lindsay Carson of the Flyers was also fined $500; the teams were fined $5,000 apiece, and coaches Mike Keenan of the Flyers and Terry Simpson of the Islanders received one-game suspensions.
