Ben Johnson of Canada surpassed the world...

Ben Johnson of Canada surpassed the world record for 100 meters with a time of 9.7 seconds, but the mark was wind-aided and hand-timed at the America’s Cup Festival of Sport at Perth, Australia.

The clocking bettered the existing world record of 9.93 held by Calvin Smith of the United States but will not be submitted for world-record approval.

Britain’s Steve Cram tore a calf muscle in the mile run and will be out indefinitely.
