Chapman Rallies to Edge Cal Poly Pomona, 68-67

Jon Samuelson scored 17 points and Karl Tompkins added 16 points and 8 rebounds to lead Chapman College to a 68-67 California Collegiate Athletic Assn. victory over Cal Poly Pomona Saturday night at Pomona.
The Broncos led the majority of the first half and held a 35-29 halftime advantage. Chapman (5-2, 12-9) tied the game at 49 on Mo Thompson’s 15-foot jump shot with 10:07 left.
Samuelson made two baskets to give the Panthers a 66-62 lead with 2:19 to go. Bill Dobbs hit a three-point shot to make it 66-65 with 1:47 left. Chapman’s Alan Erickson and Pomona’s Terry Stevens exchanged baskets to account for the final score.
Dobbs missed a 10-foot shot with three seconds left, and Darron Suttle’s five-foot shot at the buzzer went in and out.
Stevens led Pomona (2-5, 9-11) with 17 points and Zenon M added 14.
Chapman is trailing first-place UC Riverside (6-1) by one game. Riverside defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills (4-3) Saturday night.
