UCI’s Tennis Team Loses to Cal, 8-1

Sophomore Mark Kaplan was UC Irvine’s only winner Saturday, as the Anteaters were routed by California, 8-1, in a men’s nonconference tennis match at Berkeley.
Kaplan defeated No. 11-ranked Steve DeVries, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, in the No. 1 singles match.
UCI (3-2) plays host to Georgia Tech Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.
In women’s matches:
UC Santa Barbara 7, UC Irvine 2--The Gauchos won five of six singles matches and defeated the Anteaters in a nonconference match at Irvine.
UCI’s (1-3) only singles victory was by Stephanie Rhorer, who upset Lori Jonas, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, in No. 1 singles.
Christ College Irvine 5, Caltech 4--The Eagles’ No. 2 doubles team of Anne Kringel and Deanne Tegtneier defeated Junko Nunakata and Jennifer Low, 6-3, 6-3, in the season-opening match for both teams at Irvine.
