Americans are rejecting the Republican “us versus them” approach and want Democrats to lead the nation into the future, Rep. Richard A. Gephardt (D-Mo.) told House Democrats. “The American people have asked us now to lead,” Gephardt said, winding up an annual weekend issues conference of House Democrats at the Greenbrier, a luxury resort in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va. Unlike similar meetings earlier in the Reagan presidency, this one was marked by an upbeat mood in which the Democrats proclaimed that people, upset by the Iran- contra controversy and uncertainty in the economy, were ready to turn to them for answers.
