Pakistan Mob Beats Policeman to Death

KARACHI, Pakistan — A mob beat a police officer to death Friday when authorities tried to halt a protest march organized to demand the release of an imprisoned legislator.
About 500 Mohajirs marched through the city’s central district and set fire to a bus and blocked a main road with a barricade, eyewitnesses said.
Mohajirs are Muslims who fled predominantly Hindu India following the division of the subcontinent in 1947 with the independence of India and Pakistan. Repeated clashes between Mohajirs and police and between Mohajirs and other ethnic groups in Karachi have killed at least 200 people during the past two months.
The witnesses said the crowd hurled rocks at a van carrying police officers and pulled one constable from the vehicle before it drove away.
