USA Today reported that the major league baseball players’ union has filed a grievance against the San Diego Padres, claiming the team violated LaMarr Hoyt’s contract when the pitcher was given his unconditional release Jan. 7.

Hoyt was arrested Oct. 28 while trying to smuggle hundreds of Valium and Quaalude pills from Mexico into the United States. He is currently serving a 45-day prison sentence.

Hoyt’s contract called for base salaries of $1 million next season and $1.1 million in both 1988 and 1989. The grievance said the Padres wrongfully released Hoyt and asks that an arbiter make the team honor the pitcher’s contract in full.
