Cuomo Names Panel to Stem Race Violence

ALBANY, N.Y. — Gov. Mario M. Cuomo, disturbed by the recent wave of racial attacks in New York City, on Saturday established a task force to find a way to stem the violence.
“Our commitment to protect our citizens goes beyond the vigorous enforcement of our criminal laws and extends to ensuring that our citizens enjoy the full measure of their civil rights,” Cuomo said.
The 14-member Task Force on Bias-Related Violence will investigate and analyze incidents of violence or destruction of property that appear linked to a victim’s race, religion or sexual preference.
The panel, which will be chaired by Human Rights Commissioner Douglas White, will make recommendations on whether procedures now used by the state to respond to such incidents should be changed.
