Women’s Tennis Tournament in Florida Changes Dates and Switches to Clay Courts

LARGO, Fla. — The Eckerd Tennis Open, a women’s tennis event played in the fall for the past 10 years, will move to a spring date this year and switch from hard to clay courts.
Tournament officials confirmed the changes while announcing that Chris Evert Lloyd has informed them she plans to play in the $150,000 event running from April 27-May 3. Lloyd had played in the event here only twice in the last 10 years.
Tournament organizers had hoped to move to the spring for some time in an attempt to strengthen the field, said tournament director Robert Horowitz.
In order to get approval from tour officials for the move, the change in court surface has to be made, Horowitz said.
