Other Passport Problems

I can relate to and empathize with Bob Speers in his article Jan. 18 about passport trouble in Moscow. My sister and I were in the Soviet Union in September. Going through the customs and immigration officials at Moscow Airport were really unnerving ordeals. The young immigration men can stare you down until you feel as if you committed some horrendous crime. My passport was in order, but the young man on the other side of the immigration window stared up at my face and down at my passport innumerable times without saying one word. This only lasted two or three minutes but it seemed like and eternity, looking into the impassive, icy eyes of the immigration officer. I was never happier than when I boarded the Aeroflot plane and flew off to London.
