Three people were killed and five were hurt Sunday when two cars plowed head-on into each other on a busy Oceanside street and then were struck by a third vehicle.
Sgt. Bill Krunglevich of the Oceanside police said one car was traveling east at a high rate of speed on Mission Avenue near El Camino Real about 8 p.m. when it collided with a second car speeding west.
After the initial collision, a third car westbound on Mission Avenue piled into the other two vehicles, Krunglevich said. He said firefighters had to use high-powered extraction equipment to get at the victims in the three cars.
Three of the injured were taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Scripps Memorial Hospital, and two others were taken to Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside.
Krunglevich said the identity of the victims will not be released pending notification of next of kin.
