Cyclone Uma ravaged the South Pacific island nation of Vanuatu with 110-m.p.h. winds, killing one person, injuring dozens and leaving 5,000 homeless. Acting Prime Minister Sethy J. Regenvanu declared the town of Port Vila a disaster area. Australian and French ships and air force planes loaded with relief supplies headed for the 80-island archipelago. Formerly the New Hebrides, Vanuatu became an independent republic in 1980.
