Backup Unit Burns at Arizona Reactor

WINTERSBURG, Ariz. — A flash fire in a diesel-powered backup generator at the Palo Verde nuclear power plant may force a delay in restarting one of the two reactors, utility officials said.
One of two 6,700-horsepower engines, which can generate enough power to keep the control room going in an emergency, was damaged Sunday night when a fuel line ruptured and caught fire, plant spokesman Don Andrews said.
Andrews said that no radioactive part of the 1,270-megawatt Unit 2 reactor, which has been out of service for inspection since Jan. 9, was involved.
