Mixed Reviews for Trade Bills

WASHINGTON — Treasury Secretary James A. Baker III and Trade Representative Clayton Yeutter today branded major trade bills in Congress unacceptable, but House Speaker Jim Wright said the legislation enjoys wide bipartisan support.

Baker and Yeutter, appearing in defense of the Administration’s trade proposals before the House Ways and Means Committee, claimed that measures progressing through Congress would tie President Reagan’s hands in dealing with trade disputes and would violate international trading rules. Wright, appearing later before the committee, said “The 100th Congress must act now to put America back into the game.”
