‘Rap’ Theme Sought in S.F. AIDS Fight

SAN FRANCISCO — High school students have been invited to compose a “rap” song to be used in a campaign to promote safe sex and halt the spread of AIDS.
The San Francisco Health Department offered $500 and a local television performance to the student who crafts the winning rap, said department spokesman Paul Gibson.
Entrants aged 11 through 18, Gibson explained, will be supplied with a glossary of AIDS-related terminology, explaining the meanings of words and phrases such as “AIDS,” “immune system” and “condom.” They also have to a pass a test on their knowledge of the disease.
Five finalists will be selected at “rap-offs” at participating high schools Feb. 28, and the winner announced March 7.
