Gardena : Federal Funds Sought
The City Council has voted to apply for federal money to build an additional 74 units at a housing project for the elderly.
If funding is approved by the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Cooperative Services Inc., a nonprofit organization, will supervise construction and management of the additional units on 170th Street between Normandie and Vermont avenues.
City Manager Ken Landau said there is a “50-50 chance” the project will be approved by HUD, with notification expected by October.
Prospective tenants for the additional units--scheduled for completion 18 months after the project’s approval--would be selected initially from a waiting list of more than 300 elderly people who applied to live in the original 126 units.
