Gaullist Elected in French Polynesia

PAPEETE, Tahiti — Jacques Teuira, a Gaullist loyalist, was elected head of French Polynesia’s territorial government Friday following the resignation of his predecessor and a three-weeklong dock strike.
Teuira, 54, secured 23 of the 40 votes at the local assembly of this South Pacific territory, an archipelago encompassing France’s nuclear test site on Mururoa atoll.
Teuira’s election followed the resignation Sunday of Gaston Flosse, who said he could not combine the post with his job as secretary of state for South Pacific affairs in France’s right-wing government.
